The BRITER™ Identity Wheel — Growing Leaders Through Shared Meaning

BRITER™ Organizational IntelligenceIdentity · Shared Meaning

IDENTITY & MEANING

Leadership takes shape in the stories we tell.

What happens matters. How we interpret it shapes who we believe we are, how we lead, and the story others come to tell about us.

01 — Explore the competencies

Fifteen ways leadership shows up.

Choose a number to see what the competency can look like in practice. The flower stays in view as you move around the wheel.

02 — Deploying the Self

The BRITER stances.

Six internal choices a leader can notice, practice, and deploy.

Inner choice

How the leader approaches it

The stance a leader chooses before responding.

Visible action

What the leader does

The behavior others can see and respond to.

Team experience

What people experience

The conditions those actions create for the team.

03 — The Matrix

Internal stance vs. environmental condition.

04 — The Intelligence Zones

Fifteen observable competencies.

Explore one intelligence zone at a time. Each competency gives leaders a way to observe growth in practice.

05 — Ecosystem Synthesis

Tracing the root cause.

1The Symptom

What is visible

A leader struggles with Systemic Co-Creation™ (Competence 13). Traditional HR prescribes collaboration training. It fails.

2The Environmental Gap

What the system reveals

The framework reveals a lack of Accountability and Learning Out Loud, stemming from a failure to deploy the stance of Empowerment.

3The Root Cause

What sits at the center

The inability to empower others points to a fractured core: a lack of Identity through Shared Meaning. The leader must be transformed before the system can co-create.

06 — The Architecture

The architecture of organizational intelligence.

Four layers, from the center outward. Each one is expressed through the layer around it.

1Identity through Shared MeaningThe center from which leadership is interpreted.CoreExplore +

Your starting point

Who you are, what matters to you, and how you make meaning shape the way you lead. Shared meaning grows when you explore that understanding with others.

The six BRITER pillars

These are the six petals around the center. They help you consider how you show up and what you bring to your relationships and work.

How others experience your leadership

Your internal stances become visible through your behavior. The way you listen, respond, invite participation, and follow through shapes the conditions people experience around you.

Reflection: What does my behavior make possible for others?

A case from organizational life

One change. Three stories people could live inside.

Imagine a nonprofit combining two teams after a funding shift. The decision is the same in each version. What leaders make of it, how they act, and what staff experience change the outcome. Select a story to trace the four layers.

The goodPeople help shape the next chapter.Flip to read →

Identity and meaning: Leaders see stewardship as listening and sharing responsibility.

Self deployed: They name what is known, invite concerns, and revise the transition plan.

Conditions created: Staff have voice, clarity, and room to make decisions in the new structure.

Competence expressed: Leaders coordinate across teams, follow through, and adjust from feedback. People can tell a credible story about why the change matters and where they fit.

The badThe plan lands. Meaning does not.Flip to read →

Identity and meaning: Leaders interpret questions as resistance to a necessary decision.

Self deployed: They repeat the announcement and ask managers to stay positive.

Conditions created: Staff lose clarity about roles and stop raising practical problems.

Competence expressed: Coordination weakens; work gets duplicated or missed. The change is complete on paper while people tell a story of being left to figure it out alone.

The uglySilence becomes the safest choice.Flip to read →

Identity and meaning: Leaders treat protecting the decision as protecting their credibility.

Self deployed: They dismiss warnings, label dissenters as difficult, and reward agreement.

Conditions created: Staff hide errors and withdraw from conversations that could prevent harm.

Competence expressed: Leaders lose accurate information and miss a chance to repair the change. The lasting story becomes: telling the truth costs you here.

07 — The Core

The core: shared meaning.

BRITERIdentity through
Shared Meaning

Leadership is not a set of isolated skills; it is an interpretive lens.

Before a leader deploys a stance or exhibits a competence, they operate from a core identity grounded in shared meaning. Without this anchor, all outer behaviors become performative.

Leaders cannot lead transformation while refusing to be transformed.

Organizational change asks leaders to examine their own assumptions and responses as they shape the conditions others experience.
