What are you carrying?

Backpack Theory helps you notice what you carry into work. Open the story, then unpack your own backpack through the interactive reflection.

Backpack Theory™ · Guided reflection

You don’t walk into work empty-handed.

The backpack is your identity. It carries lived experience, values, knowledge, perspective, relationships, history, and sense of self. Explore what the system recognizes, uses, overlooks, adds, activates, and changes.

Guided diagnostics and reflection

Follow the question.

These experiences guide observation and preparation. They are not scored assessments; use them to frame better questions and next steps.

Original BRITER assessments

Rate the evidence. Name the story.

These tools ask different questions. Keep the person's account and the conditions around the work visible alongside any rating.

Development · Competency assessment

BRITER Competency Assessment

Use this when the work requires a clearer view of role expectations and evidence. Define 5–7 role competencies, invite the employee's self-assessment, compare it with the leader's independent rating, identify evidence gaps, and turn the conversation into a growth plan.

This is an assessment, not a worksheet library. The site keeps it high-level and sends people into the existing assessment experience.

More ways to examine what is happening.

The collection extends beyond the experiences currently available on this site. These two instruments are described here so you can understand their purpose; their interactive versions are not yet published here.

Leadership · Self reflection

Competency Self-Assessment

A 30-question reflection across the 15 BRITER competencies. A leader's own view can identify strengths and development priorities to discuss alongside examples from the work and other perspectives.

Culture · Listening instrument

Pulse Survey and Charter

A brief instrument and an accompanying charter for listening to employee experience. A pulse is a signal to interpret and follow up on; it does not explain the cause of a pattern by itself.

Planning and evidence

Turn insight into decisions.

Use these working tools to assess which measures or development evidence need attention. They produce a draft for discussion, not a readiness label.

These tools support reflection and development. Discuss consequential decisions with the people involved, using behavioral evidence and the context they can provide.
